Internet Explorer Browser Security

In response to growing concern regarding possible unauthorised / remote computer attacks when using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Web Browser products, the NSW Government has released the following Alert:

Microsoft has identified vulnerabilities in their Internet Explorer Browser products and recently updated advice on how users may increase their security when using their products.
The known Microsoft Browser versions affected are: Internet Explorer versions 6, 7 and 8 running on the following versions of Microsoft’s operating systems: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2000, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.
The concern: Targeted remote attacks by criminals exploiting vulnerabilities in the Internet Explorer products (as noted above) could result in unauthorised access of information or remote code execution.
Microsoft has recently updated their security advisory and offers a number of suggested workarounds which may be found here: Microsoft Security Advisory.
Microsoft also offers related security information via their knowledge base for IT professionals. This includes an application compatibility database that will enable Data Execution prevention (DEP) for all versions of Internet Explorer: Microsoft Knowledge Base Article.
In addition to the advice available from Microsoft in the aforementioned links, there are other Web Browser products available that you may choose to use until Microsoft have resolved the vulnerabilities in their code. Some of the other Web Browsers available include: Mozilla’s Firefox and Apple’s Safari.
Similarly, the Australian Federal Government has released the following information relating to the same subject: Internet Explorer Web Browser Security Bug (Reference no: SS0-AL2010-004).
