Agency advice on Enterprise Software Solutions

The Department of Services, Technology and Administration is currently considering industry responses to its Request for Information (RFI) to investigate options for NSW Government's $100 million software spend and to ensure the broadest range of options are available to meet Government's future software needs. As a major purchaser of software products, NSW Government needs to get the greatest value from its purchases and support innovation. NSW Government wants to consider new models for software such as Software as a Service (SaaS) and open source solutions.
The types of products sought include everything from common word processing, spreadsheets, email and internet browsers, through to more specialised applications, such as development software, portal services and cross platform business process management applications. An industry briefing was held on 2 December 2009 with responses closing 23 December 2009.
It is expected new contracts will be established with the NSW Government's key software suppliers later in 2010. A Procurement Customer Reference Group (CRG) will be established in the first quarter of 2010 to assist with the procurement phase of the project.

Until the outcome of this process is known during the second half of 2010, NSW Government Agencies should remain on their existing platforms (for example remain with Windows XP and Office 2003 for the desktop environment) unless a business case can clearly demonstrate benefits in performing upgrades. NSW Procurement have a Software Asset Management Team who are available to assist Agencies with all of their software related questions and may be contacted on (02) 9372-7622.
